Setting the New Standard for Record Retrieval and Summarization

Health data interoperability is not just about improving access - it’s about measuring outcomes. In real-world clinical settings, the utility of a record retrieval platform depends on how much and how quickly we can get medical data to clinicians. At Abstractive Health, we believe retrieval performance should be more publicly known.
To advance the conversation, we are publicly sharing a direct evaluation of our platform against Particle Health, a leading vendor in the space. The results demonstrate that we’ve built a platform that outperforms leading health data interoperability companies and is redefining what “best in class” means for both record retrieval and summarization of patient health information.
1. Record retrieval: Abstractive Health delivers more and faster
Accessing complete patient records is the foundation of every clinical decision. We had a client of ours put Abstractive head-to-head against Particle Health and the analysis showed we retrieve ~50% more patients, nearly double the patients with substantial records, and higher volume per patient - all with lower latency.

Study setup
The client selected 84 random patients and performed 42 searches using Abstractive Health and 42 searches using Particle over a two week period. The client was instructed to use the same amount of patient demographics than they were already using when performing record retrievals. While we measured latency overall for each individual retrieval, the client was able to wait up to two weeks if more data arrived from Particle.
Known limitations of the study
The client was not able to use the exact same patients to measure performance across both Abstractive and Particle because of regulatory restrictions of the HIE structure. For the study, the client used two separate telemedicine practices with an equivalent case population seen at both practices. The patients were nationally distributed with a slightly higher case volume in the Texas region. Upon manually reviewing the dataset, there was no meaningful difference between the two cohorts assembled.
Real world impact
Many record retrieval solutions report high retrieval rates, but often under ideal conditions where extensive patient demographic data (such as full address and phone numbers) must be provided. In real clinical environments, this information is frequently incomplete or outdated. Abstractive Health is built to thrive in these real-world, noisy-data scenarios.
At Abstractive Health, we’ve proven that it's possible to consistently achieve 90%+ retrieval rates using only a patient’s name, date of birth, and sex.
A year ago, we were in the same performance tier as many other vendors. We heard the frustrations from clinicians and we knew we had to do better. So we rebuilt our entire system - rethinking the architecture, patient matching, and parsing logic - to create a faster and more resilient pipeline that performs in the messiness of modern healthcare.
We didn’t ask our users to give us more patient data. We didn’t blame the HIE system. We engineered a better solution.
2. Summarization: Abstractive Health leads the field in medical accuracy
Retrieving records is only the first step, clinicians need fast and accurate summaries to cut through the noise and make informed decisions. Abstractive Health’s AI clinical summarization technology consistently achieves physician-level accuracy in summarization studies. A recent paper has shown that our summaries provide context-aware, clinically coherent and actionable summaries. Abstractive Health was recognized by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as one of the top three AI technologies nationwide for clinical summarization, selected from over 200 submissions for its ability to streamline medical record review and support healthcare providers. This recognition, part of a national initiative led by the VA underscores Abstractive Health’s leadership in delivering reliable, high-quality medical summaries at the front lines of patient care.
Our AI summarization has always been driven by peer-reviewed scientific research, our goal is to likewise drive the record retrieval industry to perform similar performance measurements.
Why this matters for summarization
1. More complete data, fewer missed records
With higher retrieval rates and better handling of incomplete information, Abstractive Health ensures clinicians have access to more of a patient’s history, reducing the risk of missed diagnoses or treatment delays.
2. Real-world reliability
Abstractive Health is designed to adapt intelligently to real-world clinical environments, delivering accurate results with minimal required inputs even when patient data is incomplete or outdated.
3. Clinically validated summaries
Backed by peer-reviewed studies and national recognition from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, our AI-powered summaries save providers time while ensuring critical clinical details are never overlooked.
At Abstractive Health, our mission is simple: empower clinicians with complete, accessible, and actionable patient data when they need it most. By delivering higher retrieval rates, requiring minimal inputs, providing faster access, and leading the field in clinically validated summarization, we’re helping clinicians make faster, safer, and more informed decisions on their patients.
